Support Kyra Simons for the 2021 motionball Marathon Of Sport Bishops University

For the 3rd year in a row, I will be taking part in the motionball event at BU! This year I have stepped into a leading role on the motionball committee at Bishop’s, so I hope that we can make the upcoming virtual event just as impactful as it has been the past few years despite the limitations of Covid.

Motionball is a national non-profit that empowers young Canadians to be leaders in their communities, raising funds and awareness for Special Olympics through integrated social and sporting events. For those who may not know, Special Olympics is very special to me and my family. My late uncle Steven had Down Syndrome and participated in Special Olympic events (swimming, track, you name it!) from age five until his passing. Special Olympics gave my uncle a sense of community, friendship, and positive self-identity. My grandmother Mary, who has also now passed, not only made sure that he was there for all of his practices and competitions, volunteered at many events over the years, and was his #1 cheerleader.

A donation to motionball is critical in supporting athletes and their families like my late uncle and grandmother. A donation supports Special Olympic athletes who participate at every level, from those who bring home gold medals and make Canada proud on the world stage to the thousands who look forward to weekly practice for fitness, fun, and friendship. You are supporting the parents, siblings, caregivers and friends of individuals with intellectual disabilities who imagine a world of inclusion and endless possibilities.

I hope that my continued efforts with motionball and Special Olympics can make a difference in the lives of these incredible athletes. If my work with motionball throughout my time at Bishop’s has half as much of the impact that my grandmother had on her local Special Olympic group, it would be a dream come true.

Thank you for your consideration. Any support is greatly appreciated.

HOW CAN YOUR DOLLARS HELP?

motionball for Special Olympics is a registered not-for-profit corporation, raising money for Special Olympics programs across Canada. 70% of the funds we raise are distributed to programs in the province where they are raised, with the remainder going to the long-term funding of programs through the Special Olympics Canada Foundation.

While COVID-19 has affected us all, Special Olympics athletes are feeling the effects of this global pandemic more than most. Sport programs are suspended, competitions have been cancelled, and many athletes remain stuck indoors, at a greater risk of contracting COVID-19 than the general population. Now more than ever, the role of motionball in these athlete’s lives is incredibly important. As one of the Special Olympics’ largest funding partners in Canada, motionball has donated over $13M to date. motionball supporters are dedicated to ensuring that every local club and program can return stronger than before, and that no Special Olympics athlete is left behind.
