On June 22, I am participating in an all-day fundraiser called motionball Marathon of Sport, bringing athletes of all abilities together on the playing field. While fundraising is one of our goals, Marathon of Sport is about so much more. This day not only brings awareness to the Special Olympics movement, but allows people with and without intellectual disabilities to interact, build lifelong friendships, and ultimately create more inclusive communities. The highlight of this event each year, is having the opportunity to compete alongside local Special Olympics athletes like my twin brother, Matthew.
Matthew inspires me each day with his constant smile and positive attitude. Special Olympics has had a direct impact on Matthew by giving him the chance to interact with his peers in a supportive, encouraging and fun environment. I'm excited that motionball works to raise the funds necessary to support these programs, and to ensure that we all can continue to support this incredible community.
For many Special Olympic athletes, participation is not just about sport, or staying fit and healthy, but also about providing a social network, a sense of belonging and a valuable source of stability. Some of Matthew's lifelong friends have been made through activities such as swimming, snowshoeing and basketball.
