I am so proud to be sharing that I have joined Brent Buchholz Memorial Team for the 2025 motionball Marathon of Sport in Hamilton Ontario. This year, on June 21, my Team and I will be taking the field, alongside local Special Olympics athletes for a full day of sports, fun and inclusivity!
Brent was born with Down's Syndrome in Thompson, Manitoba, in 1966 during a time when it was quite uncommon for people with disabilities to have adequate educational and personal supports. With much love and support, Brent's parents and five siblings supported him as he grew up and finished high school.
Special Olympics began in Manitoba in 1981 and Brent was one of the first Olympians on the roster. He proudly won three golds and a silver in swimming that first year. Over the decades, he also became an excellent curler, golfer, bowler, skiier, and most of all, dancer!
Brent passed away in January this year at the age of 58 surrounded by many loved ones.
I am inviting you to become a part of this amazing event by helping us reach our Team fundraising goal of $1,000. A tax receiptable donation of $20 will make a direct, local impact on Special Olympics athletes, like Brent and many others.
While a $1,000 fundraising target is one of our Team goals, Marathon of Sport is about so much more! Through events like this, motionball raises awareness and funds for the Special Olympics movement and allows people with and without intellectual disabilities to connect, build new friendships, celebrate differences and ultimately create more inclusive communities across Canada.
