Hi friends and family,
It’s that time of year again where I share with you my excitement for the upcoming motionball Ottawa Marathon of Sport, taking place on June 8th at Carleton University! As the volunteer event director, I’ve poured quite a bit of time and heart into making this day happen, and it is a day all about a community of people who mean a whole lot to me.
On paper, Special Olympics provides organized sport programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. In reality, they provide social connections, a chance to be part of a team, the skills to lead healthy lives, a sense of accomplishment, the possibility of travelling and seeing the world, a feeling of belonging, the list goes on and on. What I mean is Special Olympics is so much more than sport. It’s something that is hard to capture in words.
The motionball Marathon of Sport is an all-day sporting event, filled with a ton of classic Special Olympics sports, with a purpose of raising funds and awareness for Special Olympics in Canada. Here in the nation’s capital, our Special Olympics community is vibrant, dedicated, and filled with truly wonderful people. The Marathon of Sport is a chance to witness the magic of Special Olympics by playing alongside local Special Olympics athletes for the day, in a celebration of inclusion, unity, and fun!
If you know me well, then you know my life revolves around Special Olympics. It has shaped my adulthood thus far, and has completely changed the direction of my path going forward. It has allowed me to meet some of the most genuine, compassionate, huggiest people I know, whom I am proud to call my friends.
Last year, I was proud to receive The Horton Cup on behalf of the motionball Ottawa chapter, for the greatest year-over-year chapter growth in dollars raised. I was also honoured with The GW Cup, for significant engagement in the Special Olympics community.
There have been quite a few hurdles thrown our way while bringing this event together, but we’re determined to make it a transformative day for everyone who attends! Please consider making a donation at the link here, with all proceeds directly supporting our local Special Olympics chapter (70%), Special Olympics Canada (25%), and the #NoGoodWay inclusive language campaign (5%).
Thank you for supporting our athletes ♥️
