On September 21, I am participating in an all-day fundraiser called motionball Marathon of Sport. This is an action-packed day where my team- Team Chriseo and I will play sports alongside Special Olympics athletes from our community. This day helps to bring athletes of all abilities together on the playing field. While fundraising is one of our goals, Marathon of Sport is about so much more.
This day not only brings awareness to the Special Olympics movement, but allows people with and without intellectual disabilities to interact, build lifelong friendships, and ultimately create more inclusive communities. The highlight of this event each year is having the opportunity to compete alongside local Special Olympics athletes.
Team Chriseo is named in honour of my brother Chris Casey, who was a Special Olympian most of his life. Watching Chris swim and being involved in his practices, competitions and celebrations was one of the joys of my life. The happiness of a Special Olympian is pure and contagious. I thank my brother for sharing that part of his life with me.
Chris died May 1, 2022 at age 55 from cancer. Our team is honouring my brother and helping his legacy live on through Special Olympics.
While a $2,000 fundraising target is one of our Team goals, Marathon of Sport is about so much more! Through events like this, motionball raises awareness and funds for the Special Olympics movement and allows people with and without intellectual disabilities to connect, build new friendships, celebrate differences and ultimately create more inclusive communities across Canada.
